Bridging the gap to develop a service-minded institution: Stories from an institutional self-assessment model for service engagement in higher education

Summary
Presenters will share aggregate data from 20 campuses that completed an institutional planning rubricfor service engagement that brought together representatives from academic/student affairs to guide institutional work. Participants will learn about the development and utilization of the tool, including insights into emerging themes of the impact on institutional planning.

Service engagement is any endeavor that brings the community into the campus and the campus into the community, reciprocally, often addressing a social concern. It could include service‐learning, co‐curricular community service, and volunteerism. It could also include some internships and field experiences. Ultimately, the sum of these activities leads to a campus that is fully engaged with the community and vice versa.
Conference participants will learn about the development of the rubric, how campuses utilized the tool, and insights into emerging themes and what they tell us about the impact service engagement has on institutional planning. The desired learning outcomes of this workshop are:
  1. To understand how service engagement is an anchor for collaboration between academic affairs and student affairs and with community partners,
  2. To shift the discussion about service engagement as isolated and unique opportunities to a holistic approach for institutional planning, and
  3. To share themes and trends surrounding the institutionalization of service engagement in higher education.
